Well, damn. Mark E. Smith has bitten the dust. But I doubt anyone is going to be crying-he went too soon! Because good old Mark E., he went stunningly late. A difficult man, even on his best of days, Mark E. distinguished himself as many of the misanthropic have before. As a great artist. And make no mistake, Mark E. had the goods. He jabbed with phrases and exclamations the way Miles blasted single note statements, the way Ali jabbed your lights out. And yes, throughout The Fall's 40 years of existence a lot of great players passed through the band, but like James Brown, like George Clinton, like Fela Kuti and like innumerable overbearing, control freak leaders who've spent their careers in the company of their musical betters, the Fall needed Mark E. worse than Mark E. needed them. So Rest in Peace you drunken, angry, mysterious old sod. |
